Interview: Jake Kazdal, Skulls of the Shogun design lead and art director

The core of 17-BIT: Borut Pfeifer, Jake Kazdal and Ben Vance

We recently had a chance to conduct a quick interview with Jake Kazdal of 17-BIT, the creators of the much hyped, turn based strategy game Skulls of the Shogun. Jake told us about his experiences with working on the game, his stance on Windows Phone as a gaming platform, and gave us some hints as to what the future holds for Skulls of the Shogun and 17-BIT.

You’ve been working on three different versions of the game pretty much simultaneously. Have you had any big challenges with this development strategy?

We’ve had to spend a lot of time tuning the 3 different UI’s into account, while developing all three simultaneously.  I would prefer to do one at a time next game!

What specific things did you have to consider when designing the Windows Phone version?

We were surprised with the performance, it was much less optimization than we would have forecast.  The textures had to be resized lower, but because the resolution of the screen is lower you really can’t tell.  A few of our shaders had to be redone but overall its basically the exact same game as the PC/XBLA version!

What are your thoughts on Windows Phone as a platform for video games and game development?

Microsoft is taking the multi-screen approach very seriously, and we’re proud to be part of that first wave.  I think the future of the Windows 8 phone being very easy to work cross platform with Xbox and Win 8 will mean more great, console-like experiences on phone.  My biggest dream is for Microsoft to release a “Gamers Phone” that has buttons, dpads and access to XBLA!  That would be the go-to gaming experience for me over everything!

Indie developer lauds Windows Phone

As the Windows Phone continues to gain traction in the mobile phone market, the Windows marketplace appears to making the process for adding apps easy for developers. The marketplace passed the 100,000 app mark last month, and one indie developer’s statements help explain why the phone may see increased success.

Brian Calder of Tiny’s Fury Studios, which recently released Monster Katz on the Windows market, was pleasantly surprised by the process. Calder, who has experience working with iPhone, Android and Windows Phone, said Tiny’s Fury was planning on launching its premiere title on the Xbox Live Indie Games (XBLIG) marketplace, and wanted to have the game on multiple platforms. Since, Calder did not have a lot of time to code multiple versions of the game, he decided to try just one first, and “we realized we could port our code to Windows a lot easier than we could port it to Android or iPhone.”

DinoGames Interview

Dirk Nordhusen is not a stranger at all when it comes to creating Indie games with XNA, having built quite a few games over the past years for Xbox Live Arcade as well as the Zune platforms. Now with the release of Windows Phone 7, we find DiNoGames Entertainment has moved on into the Windows Phone 7 marketplace with their latest release of XNA projects. Here at WinMobileFans, we ask Dirk about those experiences in developing XNA games and what he thinks about the future of Windows Phone 7

How did you get started in developing Games Dirk and how long have you been at it?
My very first experience with game development was in 2006 when I participated in a Delphi game development contest. I had 3 months to finish the game and in the end I won the first place. From then on I had a new hobby.

How did you come up with DinoGames?
I think in 2008 I thought I need a new name, something that sounds better than my German nickname I used to have. So I sat down and thought about some possibilities and finally I came up with DiNoGames. Many people think it has something to do with dinosaurs, but to be honest, it doesn’t. Sure, it sound like dino and I use a dinosaur in my logo, but in the beginning it was just an abbreviation for my name which is Dirk Nordhusen.

Do you like playing any video games yourself,  any favorites or genres?
Sure, I played games almost my whole life. It started with the Atari 2600 back in the 80s. I never stopped playing games, so I went through the whole game history and know a lot of titles from the past. Currently I am playing Red Dead Redemption. I think Rockstar Games did a fantastic job with RDR. Basically I like a lot of games, but I always loved role playing games the most.
