Dual-Core Snapdragon™ S4 processor making its way to Windows Phone

At Computex this past week, Qualcomm gave confirmation that their Snapdragon™ S4 processor has passed certification for use in Windows Phones.

For Windows Phone, we’ll likely see the version of the S4 that packs a 1 GHz Dual ARM Cortex A5 CPU and an Adreno 230 GPU.  It is also LTE capable. While not as powerful as the Krait versions of the S4, it is still capable of flying through most mobile applications without breaking a sweat; especially when running on an operating system as light and nimble as Windows Phone. There have been no public announcements yet of Windows Phone having support for non-ARM based processors.

While Windows Phone is quite snappy already with a single-core processor, the extra core will allow upcoming Windows Phones to handle processor intensive applications more easily.  It can also aid in multitasking duties if necessary.

Qualcomm stated that both cores wouldn’t necessarily be used.  It’s unsure at the time if that means that one of the cores will have the ability to turn itself off when not needed.  If so, this could be a great way to address battery life concerns.

Are you looking forward to having a dual-core Snapdragon S4 in your next Windows Phones?
