Free W Phone 8 app lets you try out the new start screen

If you can’t wait to get your hands on the new start screen of Windows Phone 8 and 7.8, look no further than W Phone 8. The app offers a simple simulation of the upcoming start screen so everyone can get a little bit of “real” hands-on time.

Just remember, this is only to give you the feel for the upcoming features. It’s not actually a fully working start screen, but you can still organize the tiles, resize them, and change the color theme. The tiles just mostly link to the Marketplace.

HTC Locations App charges for what Nokia has for free

Shortly after the HTC Locations app added an offline feature in early May, there was also an unwelcome surprise addition: a fee. This is quite unlike the completely free navigation app available on the Nokia marketplace.

The HTC Locations app can be downloaded and used on a trial basis for 30 days. After the trial ends, in order to continue using the app, you need to purchase one of three different licenses – 30 days, one year or unlimited. The unlimited fee is $49.99 in North America, €49.99 in Europe and €39.99 in Eastern Europe.

Like free and stylish games? You might like Pirate Cat.

Xeno Bits has released its new game Pirate Cat and it’s completely free until June 1st! No ads or shenanigans like that either.

Pirate Cat is a simple, but very stylish game. It looks and sounds like an old cartoon from the 20s and is immediately reminiscent of classics like Steamboat Willie. The gameplay is just pure casual fun: you have to reach the moon, using your handmade wings, hitting birds and collecting feathers along the way. Run out of feathers and you’ll fall until you catch enough new feathers during the free fall. There’s also a time limit, so make sure not to take too many dives.

Pirate Cat is free until June 1st. Pick it up here while you still can, or scan the tag below.

You can also check out the trailer after the jump.

Get back on track with Life Goals Free

Getting your life in balance could get a lot easier with the Life Goals app coming out with a free version. The app allows you to set goals, even those that can span a lifetime, or at least the lifetime of the phone, and tracks your progress as you continue along your path to hopeful success.

The app utilizes different background colors to relay data quickly on your progress so you can either keep up the hard work, or pick up the slack a little. However, as with most free apps, be prepared for ads galore.
