Nokia Lumia 900

Nokia Lumia 900, Nokia, Windows Phone, Microsoft, Tiles, Apps, Camera, Video

In February 2011 a partnership between Microsoft and Nokia promised the Finnish mobile manufacturer would make Windows Phone their primary operating system for its smartphone devices. The combination of know-how between the software giant and leading mobile handset manufacture set some high expectations.

The following year saw the introduction of the Nokia Lumia handset line in various model iterations. In April 2012, the latest Lumia 900 handset was released and promised to the be the flagship Windows Phone. This model featured AT&T’s LTE speeds, quality build in a simple interface and a much-touted Carl Zeiss camera lens. We took a closer look at the Lumia 900 in a variety of areas to determine if Nokia’s flagship smartphone lives up to its hype.

Nokia cuts price by $50, Lumia not sellling enough?

Is the Lumia 900 really selling that badly?

After all the endless praise the Nokia Lumia 900 has received,  Nokia’s flagship device just got another price cut from $99.99 to $49.99 (included in a 2 year contract). This might be good news for all those potential Lumia fans waiting for that final nudge to invest in the device, but Nokia’s investors are not too fond of the move, reports Reuters. The cut precedes Nokia’s announcement of its second quarter figures, which many assume are below expectations. Depending on how much the average consumer actually knows about software updates, this presumed lack of interest in the device might be caused by the Lumia series not receiving the full Windows 8 OS upgrade later in October this year. The alternative Windows Phone 7.8 update will instead be made available.

Analysts have estimated Nokia to have sold around 10 million smartphone devices during this quarter, Apple getting around 30 million and Samsung bringing home the bacon with 50 million smartphones. Nokia’s shares have also gone down 3 percent yesterday.

We’re very curious if you consider the Lumia 900 to be worth the investment. Would you still go for it, regardless of the lack of a future Windows Phone 8 OS?

Nokia Lumia 900 gets spot on “Touch”

The Nokia Lumia 900 appeared twice in the season finale of “Touch” on Fox. The show with Kiefer Sutherland showcased the phone in the hands of the main child prodigy. The kid dragged out a box of phones from under his bed and sifted through the box to uncover the cyan Lumia where it was his phone of choice.

While it is not as clever as the Junior Mint episode of Seinfeld, the scenes are product placement at some of its finest. You can learn more about the scenes as well as watch them here.

UK paper names Nokia Lumia 900 ‘Best for Operating System’

The Sunday Times, a magazine in the United Kingdom, recently had a feature on smart phones challenging the iPhone’s dominance in the market. The Times named the Nokia Lumia 900 “Best For Operating System.”

The paper called the Lumia 900’s system “slicker than Android, although [it] has fewer apps.” While the Android and iPhone may have more apps now, the Windows marketplace has been increasing its app amount drastically over the past few months.

Additionally, the Times noted the 900 was “the heaviest device on test, it feels solid and build quality is superb, with a battery that will last for more than a day.”

These seem like comments that would get Siri to take notice.

Windows Phone 7 ekes out slim market share

Windows Phone 7 was the fourth top-selling smartphone operating system in the U.S.during the first quarter (Q1) of 2012. Rose-tinted glasses never worked so well.

According to NPD Group’s monthly Mobile Phone Track service, the Windows Phone 7 OS only eked out a 2 percent market share in Q1. The phone staggered in behind Google’s Android (61 percent), Apple’s iOS (29 percent) and Research In Motion’s Blackberry (5 percent).

According to Nielsen Company, Windows Phone 7 struggled to gain a foothold in the overall smartphone OS share, coming in behind even the now defunct Windows Mobile.

Another interesting pie chart on Windows Phone’s rise can be found after the jump.

Nokia Lumia 900 data connectivity patch rolls in

Nokia has obviously been burning the midnight oil: the data connectivity patch is live, earlier than expected. Lumia 900 launch may have been slightly bumpy, but Nokia has overall handled the situation like a gentleman.

Don’t forget that the $100 AT&T credit is still available for anyone who has purchased or will purchase Lumia 900 before April 21st. As for Canadian customers, they’ve got your back too: there’s a similar compensation available for Rogers customers.
